This graph is funny, but problematic.  Graph bro, are you saying you don’t ‘OWN’ your favorite song in any form - digital or analog - and therefore neglect to support your favorite band who sings your favorite song?
Or is this a rip on YouTube, a place where getting this kind of on-demand content even three short years ago was not only nearly impossible, but unheard of?
Finally, call me a party pooper, but I kinda like that there is a whole media ecosystem evolving around ‘your favorite song’ where people can engage the art on a whole new level - that YouTube makes that kind of participation possible is pretty right on.

While Phoenix’s songs are ‘catchy’, it is impossible to decipher ‘what the fuck they are talking about’ in their lyrics. This possibly has to do with a French to English language barrier. Imagine if u had to write ’smart-sounding’ pop lyrics in a foreign language and ended up making weird/forced/generic metaphors in every1 of your songs. Phoenix has sorta turned into Jonas Brothers tween pop for hi level music criticism bros. HipsterRunoff: Relevant Band + Relevant Band = Relevant Remix?

Great Bands from Small Towns

I’m just sitting here wondering - is it possible to ‘make it’ as an indie band if you live in a small town?  I know it must be - look at Conor Oberst and of course Guided By Voices (ever seen Watch Me Jumpstart?).

But still, even in this day in age of digital everything, I’m wondering - does a presumably larger real-life social network and potential show audience that comes from living in a big city provide more of a launching pad for a career in music?  Or is breaking it big just as easy living in a less populated place with a passionate group of local supporters?  Has the Internet changed this potential?  Who are some other great bands from small towns?

R.I.P. Beau Velasco
↑↑↑TheDeathSet↑↑↑ sez: “R.I.P. my dear brother, friend and band mate Beau Velasco. We are all so devastated that I will keep this short. We love you and you will be missed. You affected us all so much in the most positive ways. Our lives would not be as is, if not for you. We love you.
Beau Velasco, beloved brother, co-founding member, guitarist and vocalist of The Death Set, passed away Sunday, September 27, in Brooklyn, New York. Beau co-wrote the Worldwide album and previous two EP’s with Johnny Siera, with whom his partnership reaches back beyond The Death Set’s beginnings, to Black Panda from the Gold Coast, Australia. The Death Set moved from Sydney to the US in 2005, but Beau took a back seat from touring a while later. This original core lineup of the band had recently rejoined to write and record the next record and to resume touring together.”

Listening to Berkeley’s Glass Cake at the recommendation of @yancey - he’s right - lovely stuff. Great lo-fi pop songs.

BIGSTEREO sez: “Pictureplane and Rainbow Arabia have both put out two of the most solid releases this year —while definitely not unknowns, neither have quite received the level of hype that they totally deserve. Anyway. Rainbow Arabia recently reworked Pictureplane’s “5th Sun”. Dark rave laced with world beats: this is what 2012 will sound like as the oceans rise and the meteors rain down.”

Agreed.  Quilt is - wow! And they’re coming to Philly soon, excellent.  TBA show, we’ll have to figure something out for these kids…

Phoenix - Love Like A Sunset (Animal Collective Remix/Deakin’s Jam)

The Fader sez: “Head just exploded when reading title. So excited. Hipster Runoff will probably write a 3,000 word rant about how this song creates co-branded eternal bliss or something, but honestly, you should never be afraid to like a song, and we love this. The remix, as Deakin says on the Phoenix blog, is the result of mutual admiration and a subconscious association with marine life, and actually sounds like they might’ve recorded it together underwater.”

Okay, CRLS - let’s hear it!
