GPOYW IDEA/PROJECT TO THROW OUT THERE.
I’d appreciate it if some people out there on the interwebz would help me out with my first graduate program assignment. Essentially — using Photobooth, a webcam, DSLR, a point-and-shoot, etc. — send me a photo of yourself holding a sign of your favorite genre of music like these fellows. It’s basically a visual survey of people’s music tastes as well as a study on personal handwriting and typography.
For a more elaborate and rather wordy design brief:
For the first assignment in my Interface graduate class, I was asked to create a hierarchy (starting from me, to my particular class section, to the Design & Technology MFA program, to the Art and Media Technology school, to Parsons, to The New School, to Greenwich Village, to New York City) and map out a central theme.
It’s supposed to organize collected data and consequently analyze our relationship with ourselves and the city as a whole. Ultimately, this map will allow us to identify any trends that may occur within a particular social schema.
The theme and methodology that I chose revolve around photography and an individual’s favorite genre of music, and how such accommodations correlate with typography/handwriting, personal style, gender, and culture. Some guidelines:
- The sign must be handwritten — it’s supposed to be about handwriting and typography.
- Send a link/attach your photo to this email: indierawkjeffro[at]gmail[dot]com.
- Since I’m expanding this project to incorporate all of America/perhaps globally, tell me where you’re from… if you’re either at The New School, Greenwich Village, or NYC, even better!
Thanks, guys!

Pissed Jeans.
Photo by Icki. My favorite live band photographer. He’s taking lots of great shots of awesome bands (including amazing Teengenerate pics). His non-live show photos are great as well.

This weekend (Sept 11 - 13), WFMU’s heading back up to the haunted wilds of Monticello NY to set up camp at Kutsher’s resort (aka ”The Shining” in the Catskills), for our second annual weekend-long broadcast live from the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival. Don’t forget to listen, we’ll be broadcasting on Saturday, Sunday, and even Monday, with live sets from bands as diverse as Boss Hog, The Animal Collective, The Melvins, Grouper, Akron/Family, Deers HoofAND Hunter, and lots more.
To whet your appetite for this go-round, there’s a page on the FMA that’s chock full of nothin’ but live performances from last year’s ATP, originally broadcast by WFMU. Look for performances from Lightning Bolt, Wooden Shjips, Low, the Brian Jonestown Massacre, Harmonia, and a bunch more. All the sets are collected here.

I’ve been listening to Wyld Wyzrdz a bunch today, the “phsych/pop/drone/cool/ambient/noise/loop/whatever project” of Braden J McKenna of Utah. Braden has all sorts of great recordings for free download on his site here, including the two-track EP pictured above, Beach Party Forever! of which he says, “Recorded on the beach during tour summer 2008. Basically background drones for napping.” Love!

Navajo Bixby - Moonlighting
Dig this track - starts off all sweet and lo-fi Beach Boysy, but hold on! Wait for the deconstruction, the madness and the noise. It cometh. Heady stuff.
Where’s Vincentown, New Jersey? Is this band from the Pine Barrens!? (FTW!)

Carrie Brownstein, in a blog post where she recounts reading the name of her band - “Sleater Kinney” - in a book.
This is my favorite blog post of the year, easily, wherein I find out that she was and still is as excited about her own band as we are. Wonderful.

Buffy Saint-Marie - Adam (Richie Havens cover)
An insanely good track from her experimental 1969 record Illuminations. If you have some time, I highly recommend clicking through to read about her fascinating life.
