“This summer, Beck launched Record Club, a series of covers reinterpreting an entire classic album from the past. The first album up is Velvet Underground and Nico (AKA that record with the Andy Warhol banana on the cover), upon which he and a group of eight musicians collaborated, filming the sessions and posting them on Vimeo (under his full name, Beck Hansen).”

“I offer all the songs that I am playing in the spirit of true friendship, and while singing them, if I should seem stern, because it will come over me like that sometimes, that’s the song, you know, that I’m humbled to serve.”

I have listened to The Pains of Being Pure at Heart S/T debut LP 6 times in a row - no joke - over the course of the past 36 hours. That *never* happens. This record is so, so good. Belle & Sebastian meets My Bloody Valentine is how I keep describing it. Incredible. Its just one of those albums that gets stuck in your head in a good way - the way you’re just thirsty for it and you scroll through your iPod and you’re like, “oh shit, I guess I’ll just listen to it again.” Not a lot of music does that for me.
Thanks for turning me on to it, Ruth!

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros – Home
This band really blows me away. So great. So sad I missed them earlier this month in Philly.
whitneymcn:We’re going to be out of town on Sunday or I’d be at their Music Hall of Williamsburg show. Seriously, just watch this video of them performing Home; if you can watch that and still tell me you don’t want to check them out live you’re crazy.
It’s Arcade Fire, Afternoons, Johnny Cash, Dylan and Jesus all mixed together in a cauldron and poured onto stage to create a live show visual reminiscent of “Hair” Revue, but sounds like a polyphonic dream. toomuchhappiness

I finally watched the Pixies reunion tour documentary loudQuietloud last night after having it on my queue for, like, 2 years. It was a perfect balance of live and behind-the-scenes, plus an interesting insight into older successful musicians’ lives. Very nice film.

My good friend Eric Harvey has been working on this essay for a few months now, and it came out just amazing. Eric is truly one of the best and most thoughtful critical writers out there right now, and he’s got a wonderful skill for articulating huge ideas and conveying a great deal of historical context without being dry and dull.

Echo and The Bunnymen - The Puppet
The other day I had the great pleasure of watching “Urgh! A Music War” which features some of the best bands of 1980 playing live at various venues around the world. This clip is one of the best performances, but it was hard to choose which one to post because they are all amazing. The fashion, the sounds, the style. Awesome.

Hot track, Britt! Nice find.
britticisms:Delicious French New Wave with an addictive scattering of horns and boy and girl vocals. The beat is slinky while the melody gets stuck in your head all day long. The above is the title track from their 1985 record, the group’s only LP release.
