Ruth - Polaroid/Roman/Photo

Hot track, Britt!  Nice find.

britticisms:

Delicious French New Wave with an addictive scattering of horns and boy and girl vocals. The beat is slinky while the melody gets stuck in your head all day long. The above is the title track from their 1985 record, the group’s only LP release.

Pretty rad fan-made animated video.

Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers - The Waiting

My life summarized, right now, in a song. A really fucking good song.  A really, really, really good song.

Our friends at naturalismo posted two great tracks up their blog that should serve well to usher in the weekend…  click thru to listen.
“First up is a song by the Bay Area’s  Norse Horse, that with its shimmery guitar and summer shuffle percussion, probably should have made it onto Copper Tones. They definitely are a band to keep an eye on that hasn’t gotten too much press yet.
Next is Forest Fire’s song I make windows off their album Survival, that was released for free earlier this year.”

This Week in Corporate Sponsorship: CHAIRLIFT
Chairlift’s new video was made for MARC by MARC JACOBS and it will be featured on SAKS.com.
Microphone Memory Emotion sez: “In my opinion it’s fucking lame. I’m glad that they can make money from it- but if that’s all that they are getting out of it, well then that’s really sad. What ever happened to doing shit for inspiration (or better yet, arts?) sake??
Get this- the band is wearing the Marc Jacobs clothes in the video, and “walking the streets of Brooklyn.” WOW!!! Will this help sell clothes for Marc? Yes. Will it help sell records for Chairlift? Doubtful.”
I whole-heartedly disagree.
See here the thing.  NOTHING bands do anymore is going to sell records.  Because RECORDS DON’T SELL.  The idea of bands ‘selling out’ is super old-school and comes from a bygone (fantasy) era that said artists would be supported by selling millions of cheap plastic discs.
If they had the opportunity to work with one of the world’s highest-regarded (and best selling) artists in another industry - why the hell should they not jump at the chance for cross-promotion (and the undoubtably FAT paycheck)?
All of this only goes to serve their brand.  Any band that doesn’t recognize that they are a business and a brand is already dead in the water.  Period.  Chairlift is capitalizing on their moment in the spot light (and creating some spotlight on their own!).  Kudos.

How to Prevent Your Band's Gear from Being Stolen

Bands are constantly getting their stuff ripped off in Philly while on tour.  I’m sure this heinous scourge happens in other cities, too, but it seems to be a particular problem here.

My friend Chris (aka @bearbait) of Pattern is Movement offers up some tips for keepin’ your shit safe:

  1. Always travel with a trailer. You might think its easier to steal a trailer, but if you secure it properly – its completely safer than keeping your gear in a van.
  2. Once you purchase a trailer – your next purchase MUST BE an alpha lock. An alpha lock boots your wheel. Place one on your trailer and now, the criminal will need to either break the locks (but they cannot, see point 3) or pierce the skin of the trailer (but see point 4).
  3. Buy Hockey puck locks from Trimax. These locks house the chamber w/ the steel shell of the lock. These are the types of locks contractors use on their vehicles and are very hard to break. They def are drillable – but, if a criminal is bringing electric tools to steal from you, well then, you’ve made that criminal work for his/her booty – and you’ve got to give them a hand.
  4. So, all of those steps above should prevent gear from being stolen. However, in the unlikely event that it is – please buy insurance from the company MusicPro insurance. They do a great job and the prices are so low. My policy covers $15k for $160 a year! That covers your gear from theft!

And lastly, stay in Mount Laurel when you play Philly. Don’t even go to the burbs of Philly. You know your in the burbs when you start seeeing Courtyard Marriotts and Ruby Tuesdays. And use priceline for hotels. You can get a Courtyard in most cities for no more than $50!!!!!! Its worth it to you and your band.

Hope this helps.

- seasoned touring musician (whose had his shit stolen too)

Marnie Stern is an incredibly candid and hilarious person. In this clip, she talks about having to reject the advances of her former drummer and tells a story about getting hit on by John Cusack when she was 17. Here’s some more.

She so needs her own show.

Holy hot stuff, Marnie!  You rule.

Man this is just epic, I am SO getting one of these. As you can see, this neat USB-hub is shapped like an old cassette like we used to listen to; perfect for music nerds, geeky musicomaniacs (and hipsters but who cares about these.) Link to the buy page on clicktrough.
- The wind will blow it all away.

In music business speak, “A & R” has long meant “Artists and Repertoire.” It is a term that refers to the elusive brass-ring-key-to-the-kingdom-Holy Grail for many musicians when they ask, “How can I get the attention of the industry?” A&R people have traditionally been the gatekeepers of glory; those sought-after staffers at record labels who find talent and roll them up and out at the door of “the deal.” As we all know, the music world has changed. Forever. So, I’m proposing a new interpretation of the term A&R. I believe we have moved into the era where those letters will more accurately stand for “Advocacy and Radar.

The Pill Box: The New A & R…
