Friends with Benefits: Sharon Van Etten | Impose
“Language of Stone has been able to put fourth an incredibly handsome discography by artists like Lights, Heavy Hands, Mythical Beast, and Silver Summit, but truth be told, Because I was in Love by Sharon Van Etten nearly devastated me upon first listen. The album is hauntingly beautiful - with Ms. Van Etten reminding us of what we loved about Cat Power before she decided to play indie rock karaoke, and sounding like a blues-drenched version of Marissa Nadler.”

summertime for me is listening to mostly folk, acoustic, singer/songwriter jams. i found kid on the pavement before i moved out west, and i really enjoy his music and am hoping to get him down to oregon to play some shows. check out his myspace for a couple of songs.

“Vancouver’s Cameron Reed — aka Babe Rainbow — creates haunted, murky, “inverted dubstep cave recordings” that evoke similar feelings of paranoia/anxiety as SALEM’s darkest and most desolate work. Reed sent over a few songs for us, and he’s made most of his other stuff available for free download at his blog; check the way he’s warped You Say Party! We Say Die!’s dance-punk song “Like I Give a Care” and Wavves’ “Weed Demon” into his own eerily unsettling underwater dirge-step jams.”

Nylon Jun/July 09 Music Issue- rock out indeed.
I felt compelled to post this primarily because of the main cover line (I kept getting ‘oh look, it’s your issue’ from people).  The rocking out aside, I love reading nylon because many friends and acquaintances often grace the pages of the magazine (giving it more of a cool local zine feeling  for me than a national publication).
But of course, the music issue is going to catch my attention a bit more. My favorite features of this issue?

social studies: ladies who run labels (p.66)- 3 amazing ladies doing one my dream jobs
directory: band aids ‘Just the Two of Us’ (p.92)- rockstar muses and the iconic fashion pieces that defined them
private icon: riot grrrls (p.100)- music’s rebel girls and the beauty products that kept them looking hot in that ‘anti-pretty, pretty’ way

I have a whole bunch of friends and clients whose kids are out there playing in bands. Kids aren’t responding to TV or movies anymore. Music is what’s cool.
