What The Heck Fest #8: July 17th, 18th & 19th, 2009
Wow, this music festival looks like a ton of fun. Wish I could attend (if only I weren’t on the other side of the continent).
Among the many awesome bands performing, here are a few that caught my eye:
- Calvin Johnson
- Casiotone For The Painfully Alone
- Earth
- Grouper
- Karl Blau
- Lucky Dragons(!)
- Mirah
- Mount Eerie

I’m listening to this awesome station right now. Highly recommend.
They say: “We are an online (streaming only) diy radio operating literally out of a basement. We feature found sound, field recordings, story-telling (sometimes paranormal), dream-collecting, radio plays, live house shows and local in-home performances. We also support local and northwest music and other underground/indie music from around the world. We broadcast 24 HOURS A DAY everyday”

My friend @jtramsay, the music editor at Comcast.net, started this new series of stripped down performances and interviews with indie bands in the lobby of the Comcast building downtown Philly. This is episode one. I’m really glad to see big companies supporting indie artists like this.

Our music writer, Brandon Kim, recently chatted with music video director and photographer Timothy Saccenti (responsible for the above Animal Collective video, as well as the new Chairlift video for “Bruises”). Saccenti has a lot to say about his creative approach, old-school aesthetics and the films that inspire him. Read it here.

Why I Scream: Press Kit Photos
This is an absolutely amazing post. Just one small snip:
“There are a lot of things in the music “scene” or “business” that piss me off. (I put those things in quotes, because: a) there is no legitimate scene, just a bunch of self-important idiots running around in stupid outfits, making each other and themselves feel interesting; and b) there is a business in music, but not much of it, and it pretty much flows in one direction. For many of us, calling it a music business is nothing short of delusional.) In the top tier of things that annoy me about whatever this realm is which we’re all a part of (even if your role is simply reader/consumer, you’re a part of it - a big part) is the press kit photo thing.”

CRLS sez:
‘Sometimes I wonder
what the world was like
before God invented digital projection technology
and ‘enhanced’ the shows of some of my favourite bands’
