The Grateful Dead - It Hurts Me Too (Copenhagen, 1972)

whitneymcn:

This is another case where “cover” doesn’t exactly seem like the right term, but it’s a great take on the song. Happy cover Friday!

Go, Pigpen! Go!

Mark Gormley - Little Wings

Um. Holy shit. This video just melted my brain (as it apparently just did to @ZeFrank’s).

naturalismo sez: “This video and song nearly seem staged in the present trying to appear as though it were shot in late 50’s. But the truth of the matter is that this clip of Pete Drake playing the song, “Forever” off his 1959 self-titled album,  is so far ahead of its time it still sounds extremely fresh and futuristic today. Guy basically invented the vocoder for chrissakes…and applied it to a slide guitar? Easily one of the most strangely alluring and immediately infectious songs I’ve ever come across. I highly recommend tracking down his full album Forever. You’ve most likely heard his slide guitar work all over the place such as on George Harrison’s “All Things Must Pass” and Dylan’s “Nashville Skyline.”

Gorgeous.

I’ve really been diggin’ Ganglians lately. Got introduced to them with one track included on the best mixtape I’ve downloaded so far this fall (originally posted by Tumblr mm/dd/yyyy).
bread ‘n’ butter sez: “Ganglians have a new 7” out on Captured Tracks. The two tracks, “Blood On The Sand” and “Make It Up,” are like a hybrid of the fiery lo-fi-punk of their self-titled 12” and the mellower, Beach Boys tinged tracks onMonster Head Room.”

Cold War Kids make an interactive music video. Blogworthy? Yeah, I guess. It’s kinda neat.
See the ‘making of’ video here.

Getting to Know… Adam Arcuragi
“Adam Arcuragi makes music like some folks host parties. Equal parts revival tent and corner pub, his sophomore LP I Am Become Joy (out now) sounds like get-together where everyone feels at home—in the room and in their own skin—and seamlessly connected. Rife with rowdy choruses, banjos, horns and handclaps, the record invites anyone listening to the party, too, calling us in to have a beer and sing along with a collective of folks called humankind, spanning time and distance.”

I am not sure how long the ’shelf life’ of an aesthetic/genre/band is supposed to last. Once you have a ‘fan’, will that fan buy something from you for the rest of his or her life? I wonder if a chillwave band will ‘release’ a video/single for one of their 2k9 songs in 2k13. Really ‘baffled’ that Ed Banger is ‘back on the scene.’ I think it is generally a ‘good thing’ for music websites to have a 6 month turnover on a genre, so that ‘we’ can appear to always be on the lookout for something totally new and different. I just wish more blogs and music site zines would be willing to ‘throw artists under the bus’ and ‘act like certain artists never existed.’ It’s okay to be ashamed of who u used to be. Distancing urself from bands that u used to like is ‘just part of growing up’ in the modern world. HipsterRunoff asks: Would u bet on a ‘Blog House Revival’?
