Thee Oh Sees
Raven Sings The Blues sez “Ok its official. I yield, I submit, I crumble because Thee Oh Sees just keep pelting us with release after release of slippery, skuzzy chunks of garage bliss. On top of the mountain of releases already pressing the wallets of the populace, they’ve unloaded Zork’s Tape Bruisewhich rounds up all those limited tracks you might not have gotten a chance to track down on vinyl first time ‘round - from the Peanut Butter Oven 12” to the Intelligence Split and a few other bits and bobbles of Oh Sees goodness in between.”

My friends at the awesome Philly-based Weathervane Music Organization just launched their first video. This one features Austin band {{{sunset}}} recording a new track with producer Quentin Stoltzfus (of Mazarin). They really knocked it out of the park, too. The production quatlity on this vid is stellar and the song is incredible too.
Check out more of what the Weathervane folks are doing by following them here on Tumblr, or on Twitter, or on Facebook, or get on their mailing list. Much more greatness will be coming out of this project very soon. Stay tuned.

Amnesty - Free Your Mind

Amnesty is a lesser known funk/soul band of the 70s. With a style similar to Sly & The Family Stone, they were also a group that talked about the social and political problems of the US during the 60s and 70s. I came across Amnesty due to their album, Free Your Mind: The 700 West Sessions being remastered and re-released on Now-Again Records (subsidiary of Stones Throw) back in 2007. I give Amnesty the credit for re-sparking my interest in funk and soul music once again. They were ahead of their time and to their fan base, they were also a defining and innovative force in the 1970s Funk movement. It kills me to see how overlooked Amnesty is because this is definitely some of the most intensely charged and funky albums I’ve ever heard.
