Narrow Sparrow - Joe Meek’s Dream
This beautiful, hand-made cut-out stop motion video directed by Richard Portillo compliments this Chicago band’s first single, a Neutral Milk Hotel-inspired ode to Joe Meek (who’s bio speaks volumes about the artists’ intentions):
Joe Meek was this amazing recording engineer/producer in the early 60’s who had a #1 song that was recorded in his apartment. He was obsessed with Buddy Holly and spoke with him through dreams. It was said he had bi-polar disorder and he took his life in 1967. The video tries to follow that linear path in an abstract way. I also tried to incorporate elements of early electronic music in the visuals (leon theremin, clara rockmore, etc) as well as music history.
